Let’s face it. By definition we are judged by how productive we are in society (ie, how much money we earn.) Has it brought you happiness and given you purpose and meaning? Here is an offer for something off the beaten path,I am offering ABSOLUTELY FREE OF CHARGE the permanent use of a wonderful waterfront historical farm, four barns, a paved driveway, some equipment and a vehicle and if necessary free training to run a hobby farm. The house is a picturesque 1830 stone home in good condition, spacious with wood floors and a fabulous wood burning stove to compliment the oil heating system. The running costs in themselves are not that high all things considered. The fifty tiled acres is currently an organic waterfront farm. Location within an hours drive to Ottawa and a two minute drive into Smith Falls. There is fishing on the property should you desire and some locals swim in the waterway here as well.Yes, it was a small fortune to buy but you won’t have that headache.

Free. Absolutely FREE.

What’s the catch? You become a potential candidate if you are willing to care for some farm and domestic animals. I will pay the cost of food and vet bills but you will do the work.

The “catch” for assuming usage of this stellar property, make no mistake about it, is HARD WORK and total COMMITMENT to making use of the property and showing a genuine interest in animal welfare. . An understanding that you must be around the property for part of each day forever type of thing. Definitely not for flighty types, or those that believe in the expression,
“hard work never hurt anyone but why take a chance.”

Ideal for a couple or more people to split the chores. The suitable candidates must show that they are not financially insolvent. Those with home based businesses would find this lifestyle better sustainable for sure. You must demonstrate financial wherewithall. Sustainability. Business proposals for the property are welcome provided you can show me that you are able to weather basic living expenses until you “make it big” should this be your goal (though I am not realistically encouraging that). If your plan is to run a farm sanctuary or domestic or wildlife animal sanctuary (though this requires a license if you plan wildlife), to fundraise for the like and harness the unbridled local volunteer enthusiasm this would be a dream location and setup. There is certainly a great need for this in the area. If you entertained thoughts of entering the organic farming market this is also a great opportunity, especially with local pickup or delivery options and possibly as well a chance in Ottawa’s long established food market as a secondary consideration. Applicants must love and respect all animals, whether this means mice, rats, rabbits, coyotes, porcupines, skunks. Ground hogs, snakes and other so called “nuisance animals.” Here, no animal is killed. I am vegan orientated but you need not be of course as long as you live and let live. And THINK GREEN.

To get an idea of what the farm looks like check this link, one of many television reviews at:

As I now continue to read each response one by one, I get a sense that some of you are not sure what life is like here. For that group I plan to launch a daily blog which explores what your life will be like should you be the lucky new occupant. I will post the link here on this page once it is in motion, as well as any new developments.

SOME NEW DEVELOPMENTS PLEASE NOTE: I have had millions of hits on various international social media platforms so many in fact that, on last count, I received over ten thousand proposals by email, and my phone can no longer be used by me and there are those literally fighting in my driveway over who gets to talk with me first. Without being invited here! Stop the world, I want to get off. As of now, even if you had sent me something, the only way, and I mean this, to reach me is by sending me an old fashion legible posted letter (not hand delivered, it must be posted) to the following address. Forgive me by saying this but if you email me, phone me or just show up I cannot accept your application. I’m sure you understand. This has all come to this thanks for my favourite television network — the CBC who changed my ad of free rent to FREE LAND, FREE FARM, FREE LIFE! A slight misrepresentation, eh? Such is life and here is my mailing address and remember, just like you, I’m an average Joe that suddenly found himself in a nightmare!
